What are Jack Frost Mushrooms?

Jack Frost Strain: Origins and History

Jack Frost is a Psilocybe cubensis strain with an unusually clear history for a mushroom variety. It is credited to the breeder known as Dave Wombat, who created it in 2019 by crossing True Albino Teacher (TAT) with Albino Penis Envy (APE). It first circulated under the working name “TAPE”, a blend of its parents’ names, before the wintry name stuck (GreenState).

That documented lineage is the exception rather than the rule. A 2025 review of cubensis research notes that strain names are largely informal and community-based, and that cultivars sold under the same name by different suppliers are often not genetically similar (Kurzbaum et al., 2025). Jack Frost is better documented than most, but the same caution applies to every strain: the name on a label is a claim, not a lab result.

What Are Jack Frost Mushrooms?

Jack Frost mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of Psilocybe cubensis, the same species behind Golden Teacher and Penis Envy. Like every cubensis, they contain psilocybin, which the body converts to psilocin, the compound behind the psychedelic effects (NIDA).

Both parents are albino lines, and Jack Frost inherits the look: white to ivory caps and stems, a cap edge that often curls upward with maturity, and thick, lumpy stems. Because albino lines produce little pigment, the spore print is very pale, often compared to a light dusting of snow. Jack Frost still bruises blue where it is handled or damaged; that colour comes from psilocin oxidising into blue compounds after injury, not from pigment (Lenz et al., 2020). Our Jack Frost dried mushrooms are sold by weight.

One point of confusion is worth clearing up. Some foraging and cooking sites use “Jack Frost” as a nickname for unrelated edible woodland fungi, and earlier versions of this page mixed the two up. The Jack Frost sold as a psilocybin strain is a cultivated cubensis. It is not a culinary mushroom and should never be foraged or cooked as one.

Jack Frost vs Other Psilocybin Mushroom Strains

Jack Frost is usually measured against its parents. Albino Penis Envy has a reputation as one of the strongest cubensis lines, while True Albino Teacher is an albino form of the Teacher family. Breeder and grower accounts place Jack Frost between them: stronger than an average cubensis, but not as intense as APE (GreenState).

It belongs to a small group of albino strains that also includes Albino A+. Compared with a pigmented baseline such as Golden Teacher, the obvious difference is colour. The practical difference is reported potency, which, as the next section shows, varies more than strain names suggest. Our guide to magic mushroom strains compares the wider range.

Jack Frost Potency and Dosage

Lab results cited by Christopher Pauli of the testing company Tryptomics put Jack Frost at roughly 0.5% to 1.2% total active tryptamines by dry weight, which he described as fairly average for cubensis, with results depending on how each culture was isolated (GreenState).

That range is a reminder that potency belongs to a batch, not a name. A 2026 study that grew 14 cubensis strains under identical laboratory conditions found total tryptamine content differed by more than 7.8-fold between strains, and individual mushrooms within a single strain varied by roughly 13% to 23% in psilocybin (Sharchaton et al., 2026). Start low with any new batch, even if you have used Jack Frost before.

Commonly cited harm-reduction reference points for dried cubensis are roughly 0.1 to 0.3 grams for a microdose, 1 to 2.5 grams for a moderate experience, and 3.5 grams or more for a strong one. Our dosage chart and microdosing guide explain how those ranges are used. They are general reference points, not medical advice.

Jack Frost Effects and Experience

Psilocybin effects typically begin within 15 to 45 minutes and usually last four to six hours (Health Canada). Reports of Jack Frost describe visual changes, shifts in mood and a strongly introspective quality, but those accounts are personal rather than measured. NIDA notes that the same substance can feel blissful or frightening depending on expectations, surroundings, dose, potency and individual biology (NIDA).

Psilocybin can raise heart rate and blood pressure and can cause nausea, confusion or anxiety. People with heart conditions, a personal or family history of psychosis, or who take psychiatric medication face higher risks and should speak to a clinician first.

How to Take Jack Frost Shrooms Safely

The safety framework used in clinical research is a sensible model: careful preparation, a calm and safe physical setting, screening out people with a personal or family history of psychotic disorders, and a trusted, sober person present for stronger experiences (Johnson et al., 2008). Our guide to what a trip sitter does covers that role in detail.

Weigh doses on a scale accurate to 0.01 g rather than estimating. Avoid combining mushrooms with alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, since Health Canada warns that mixing substances raises the risk of serious side effects (Health Canada). Never drive or operate machinery while the effects last.

Jack Frost Mushrooms: Legal Status in Canada

Psilocybin and psilocin are controlled substances in Canada. Health Canada states that the production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal unless authorised, for example through an approved clinical trial, a section 56 exemption, or a practitioner’s request through the Special Access Program, which has accepted psilocybin requests since 2022. Municipal non-enforcement policies do not change federal law. If you are unsure about your own situation, check current Health Canada guidance or get independent legal advice.

FAQ

Who created Jack Frost mushrooms?

Jack Frost is credited to the breeder Dave Wombat, who crossed True Albino Teacher with Albino Penis Envy in 2019.

Is Jack Frost stronger than other strains?

It is usually described as stronger than average but milder than Albino Penis Envy. Published lab figures fall in a fairly typical cubensis range, and batch-to-batch variation is large, so treat any strain-level potency claim as approximate.

Why are Jack Frost mushrooms white?

Both parent strains are albino lines that produce little pigment, so the caps, stems and spore prints are pale. They still bruise blue, because bluing comes from psilocin oxidising, not from pigment.

Is it the same as the edible “Jack Frost” mushroom?

No. Some foraging sites use the name for unrelated edible fungi. The psilocybin strain is a cultivated Psilocybe cubensis and should never be foraged or cooked as a culinary mushroom.
