Treasure Coast Strain: Origins and History

Treasure Coast is a Psilocybe cubensis strain named after the Treasure Coast, the stretch of Florida’s Atlantic shoreline that takes in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. Many early cubensis strains were named after the place they were collected, and the name points to a Florida collection. Beyond that, no reliable record exists of who collected it, when, or how it entered cultivation.

That gap is typical. A 2025 review of cubensis research describes strain names as mostly informal and community-based, and notes that cultivars sold under the same name by different suppliers are often not genetically similar (Kurzbaum et al., 2025). Anything you read about a strain’s origin should be treated as folklore unless it comes with a documented source.

What Are Treasure Coast Mushrooms?

Treasure Coast mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of Psilocybe cubensis, the same species as Golden Teacher and most strains sold in Canada. Like all cubensis they contain psilocybin, which the body converts to psilocin, the compound responsible for psychedelic effects (NIDA).

In appearance they look like a typical cubensis: caramel to golden-brown caps that lighten toward the edge, pale stems, dark purple-brown spores, and blue bruising where the flesh is handled. That bluing is a chemical reaction, as psilocin oxidises into blue compounds after injury (Lenz et al., 2020).

Earlier versions of this page described Treasure Coast as a culinary, foraged mushroom. That was wrong. It is a psilocybin strain, not a cooking mushroom, and wild mushrooms should never be picked and eaten on the strength of a name. NIDA lists misidentification among the real risks of wild mushrooms (NIDA).

Treasure Coast vs Other Psilocybin Mushroom Strains

Treasure Coast belongs to the group of cubensis strains named after a place of origin, alongside Mazatapec from Mexico and Burma from Myanmar. Like them, it is usually described as a mid-range strain, but there is no published lab data comparing Treasure Coast with better-studied varieties. Our magic mushroom strains guide covers how the common strains are usually compared.

We do not currently stock Treasure Coast. If you are looking for a comparable mid-range cubensis, our dried mushroom range lists the strains we carry.

Treasure Coast Potency and Dosage

No peer-reviewed or published lab figures exist for Treasure Coast specifically, so any potency claim you see is anecdotal. What is well established is how much cubensis varies. A 2026 study growing 14 strains under identical conditions found more than a 7.8-fold difference in total tryptamines between strains, and 13% to 23% variation in psilocybin between individual mushrooms of the same strain (Sharchaton et al., 2026).

Commonly cited harm-reduction reference points for dried cubensis are roughly 0.1 to 0.3 grams for a microdose, 1 to 2.5 grams for a moderate experience, and 3.5 grams or more for a strong one. Our dosage chart and microdosing guide explain how those ranges are used. They are general reference points, not medical advice.

Treasure Coast Effects and Experience

Psilocybin effects usually begin within 15 to 45 minutes and last four to six hours (Health Canada). Users describe changes in perception and mood that can range from gentle to overwhelming. According to NIDA, the experience depends on expectations, surroundings, dose, potency and individual biology, and the same dose can feel very different from one occasion to the next (NIDA).

Possible side effects include raised heart rate and blood pressure, nausea, confusion and anxiety. People with heart conditions, a personal or family history of psychosis, or who take psychiatric medication face greater risk.

How to Take Treasure Coast Shrooms Safely

Clinical researchers rely on preparation, a safe and calm setting, screening for a personal or family history of psychosis, and a supportive person present throughout (Johnson et al., 2008). Those principles translate well outside the lab, and a sober trip sitter is worth having for anything above a low dose.

Weigh every dose on a 0.01 g scale. Do not mix mushrooms with alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, which Health Canada says raises the risk of serious side effects (Health Canada). Do not drive until the effects have fully worn off.

Treasure Coast Mushrooms: Legal Status in Canada

Psilocybin and psilocin are controlled substances in Canada. Health Canada states that the production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms are illegal unless authorised, for example through an approved clinical trial, a section 56 exemption, or a practitioner’s request through the Special Access Program, which has accepted psilocybin requests since 2022. Municipal non-enforcement policies do not change federal law. If you are unsure about your own situation, check current Health Canada guidance or get independent legal advice.

FAQ

Where do Treasure Coast mushrooms come from?

The name refers to Florida’s Treasure Coast, which suggests a collection there, but no documented record of the original collection or cultivation exists.

Can I forage Treasure Coast mushrooms in Florida?

No. Picking wild mushrooms by name is dangerous because of misidentification, and psilocybin mushrooms are controlled in Canada and most other places.

Is Treasure Coast a strong strain?

It is usually described as mid-range, but there is no published lab data for it. Potency varies widely between batches, so start low.

Do you sell Treasure Coast?

Not at the moment. Our dried mushroom category lists the cubensis strains we currently carry.
